The Winter Blues - You Can Exercise Through Them!

Keeping active during the Winter months can be tough. You keep telling yourself that this cold weather and all of the snow and ice will never end…this will eventually lead to the Winter Blues! What kind of medicine can the doctor order for these Winter Blues? In most cases, a simple change of routine is the cure for the Winter Blues.

If you are finding that you have less time, fewer opportunities, or are not motivated to exercise, a simple change in your daily routine can make a big difference. Exercising through the Winter Blues is easy. Let’s take a look at how you can change your routine to cure any Winter Blues and to keep you
active:

  • If you normally exercise during the late afternoon or early evening, try exercising for 20 minutes in the morning using just resistance bands. A fast paced 20 minute resistance band workout will provide you enough of strength training for the day and it will jump start your metabolism. You’ll feel energized and your body will continue to burn excess body fat throughout the day.

  • Mix –up your diet…explore new foods. For the month of February, make a commitment to try 2 new foods per week…preferably foods that are low in fat. Being adventurous will keep you motivated to exercise and will provide you a sense of accomplishment.

  • Try walking just 100 more steps each day during February. If you do, guess what? You will have logged an extra 20 miles during the month. Burning extra calories has never been easier. You’ll want to track your progress by using a step pedometer.

  • No time to exercise….that’s not an excuse! The next time you go to work or go shopping, try using a cardio weighted belt. A cardio weighted belt can weigh up to 10 pounds. These weighted belts can be easily concealed under a jacket or sweater so nobody will know that you are even exercising. The weighted belt will add enough resistance to your normal walking activity that will enable you to burn extra calories and strengthen your legs.

  • Try two new exercise products during the month of February. There are many inexpensive options for you to choose from such as jump ropes, resistance bands, hand weights/dumbbells, body balls, or medicine balls. Many of these products can be found on sales for less than $14.99 or below and come with exercise videos or manuals to help you along.

Exercising through the Winter Blues can be easy to do and February is the perfect month to do so. Keep a positive attitude and don’t be afraid to mix-up your routine. I know you can do it!
