Resistance Band - vs - Weights

Points to Ponder

Strength training is a vital part of fitness conditioning. The benefits of strength training are physical capacity, appearance, and metabolic function. There are several options for attaining these benefits. Resistance bands (dynamic constant resistance equipment) and weights (dynamic variable resistance equipment) are two of the most popular options. Training movements, cost of equipment, and accessibility are factors that set them apart.

Resistance bands and weights are similar in that the amount of resistance force encountered determines the amount of muscle force applied. Resistance bands give a constant resistance force throughout the exercise movement; weighted resistance force changes throughout the exercise movement. Resistance bands also provide a variety of tensions. This provides an array of progressive resistances throughout the exercise movement and requires more control from the individual. The weights give the muscle constant resistance throughout the exercise movement, which requires little control. Therefore, resistance bands provide a wide range of training movements as opposed to the limited number of weight training movements.

The beginner, intermediate, or advanced fitness novice will benefit from the use of resistance bands, as well as the different types and levels of resistance. Bands facilitate the demands of eventual progression to more resistance. The resistance bands are effective and safe enough for an individual to use alone. There is no need for someone to assist, which may not be the case with heavy weights. The easy use of resistance bands helps to motivate the individual; therefore they see results in appearance and strength.

Cost is always a factor. Resistance bands are very affordable, especially when compared to weight equipment. The cost of weight equipment, in the beginning, can be minimal. But as the individual progresses, so does the need to have more weight, which means added costs.

Resistance bands are more accessible than weights. The convenience of having the resistance bands on hand at all times keeps the workout regimen within the individual’s control. Weight equipment must be stored, set up, and is often less accessible. The resistance bands give the individual the ability to perform their workout at home, work, or even outdoors and always at their convenience.

The comparison between resistance bands and weight equipment is very diverse, but the strength training benefits both provide is the one thing they have in common. Whether you prefer resistance bands or traditional weights, be sure to make strength training a vital part of your fitness routine.
