Stretching – The not so talked about part of fitness
When it comes to health and fitness, there isn’t a lot of talk about stretching. We hear about healthy diets, doing 30 minutes of cardio exercises at least 3 times a week, or the importance of strength training and working your core. In fact, a lot of people overlook stretching altogether, until they injure themselves. Why is stretching so important and what are some of the key things you should know about it?
WHAT IS STRETCHING?
- Stretching consists of specific moves that warm up muscles.
- Extending the body or limbs to the fullest length.
- Movements or poses (as in yoga) that are done to make the muscles pliable.
BENEFITS OF STRETCHING
- Reduces the recovery time, for muscles, between workouts.
- Increases range of motion and boosts strength.
- Assists in attaining and maintaining flexibility.
- Reduces or prevent pulls, sprains or inflammation.
PRODUCTS USED FOR STRETCHING
- Exercise mats provide a comfortable workout surface for stretching.
- Stretching straps act as an extension of your limbs to stretch more safely and effectively.
- Specific apparel, like vinyl suits and solar belts help to keep the muscles warm and provide additional support. They can be used while you stretch only, and/or worn during the rest of your workout, too.
STRETCHING TIPS
- Before you perform any stretch you should first do a gentle warm up, such as marching in place for a couple minutes to get your muscles pliable.
- Stretch before you participate in any exercise or sporting activity. Never force or strain any stretch because it may cause injury.
- During fitness activities or throughout the course of your day, gentle limbering can be done to reduce muscle stiffness and tension.
- Stretch at the end of your cardio and strength workouts to elongate muscles and fight off soreness.
Now that you know the key facts about stretching, we hope that you’ll make it an integral part of your routines. Plus, start to talk up the many benefits of stretching to your family and friends, as part of their overall health and fitness program!!
